dgj219 Arrival City 4.0, , 2016

Today's migration into Europe is similar to the migration, Doug Saunders describes in his famous book 'Arrival City'. The new-arrivals to the cities acquire professional and language skills. They create micro-enterprises which form their economic basis. In most cases they build their own houses without government support. The resulting informal settlements are not a model for the European cities. Nevertheless, we can learn how the New-comers participate actively in the integration.

'Arrival City 4.0' translates this idea into an European context. Our concept provides a structure which guarantees that the buildings meet the technical, urbanistic and cultural requirements, and the visibility of the building is attractive and sustainable.

'Arrival City 4.0' is an expandable, growing concept, which represents a low-investment solution for the general housing shortage. With a minimal investment, a basic accommodation can be built in a short period of time. But unlike normal emergency accommodations (tents, containers) 'Arrival City 4.0' opens up opportunities to be transformed into a permanent building, which is a valuable part of the city.

Phase 1 (Timeframe 1 month)

The initial basic structure of the building can be set up in four weeks by untrained workers. After this first period the building consists of the structural framework, the circulation core and the polycarbonate shell. Each floor is equipped with a bathroom and a kitchen to guarantee the basic necessities. Within this framework the refugees can create a basic level of privacy with small residential modules or tents. This first phase will take place in spring or summer, so that the polycarbonate shell provides sufficient thermal comfort. Until the beginning of the cold season, the building envelope will be further improved.

Macro-level (time frames of 10 to 30 years)

In our concept, the newcomers have the opportunity to participate in the construction of their new home. The workshop in the building is equipped with computer-controlled CNC milling machine, which can be used to produce furniture, interior walls or other parts of buildings. In the following weeks, the interior of the apartments will be completed. Rooms are separated with partition walls. Additional bathrooms and furniture will be installed. Within between 6 and 12 months the basic accommodation is consolidated into a full-fledged residential building that meets the high European energy standards.

The quickest and most successful integration will be achieved when we open up ways for the fugitives to take part and contribute. The self-construction is legally not critical, because does not constitutes regular employment and payment. The workshop in the building can form the nucleus of a start-up company, in which the new-arrivals manufacture and sell designer furniture. They can also produce and build further Arrival-City-Buildings in the city, allowing them to become a part of the society.
