IBA Heidelberg - Collegium Accademicum

Housing is not only residential - but also means to live, create and be creative.

Throughout Germany, many large barracks areas have become vacant following the departure of the Allies. These offer the chance to counter the housing shortage by building new residential quarters.

In one of these conversion areas will be established a self-managed dormitory for about 200 people.

By the self-administration of the dormitory, it will find a place that is very closely matched to the needs of the residents. At the same time affordable housing will be provided and permanently removed from the speculative market under the concept of "Mietshäusersyndikat".

The Collegium Academicum also sees itself as an educational institution, offered by the semiannual interdisciplinary workshops and seminars, which are organized by the residents itself. The concept also provides project-based learning and a tutoring program for residents. With a preparatory course, a kind of "general studies", prospective students should be given the opportunity to make the sometimes very difficult orientation period between leaving school and beginning of its studies, with an interdisciplinary and accompanied undergraduate studies.

Vario Wohnen / Flexible Housing

For the CA building, we have developed a completely new type of housing. The flexible use and adjustment of the apartments allows different temporal and spatial scales.

The basic form of the apartment consists of a community space in the center, arround which the three individual rooms and sanitary facilities are arranged.

The individual rooms consist of two parts, each with 7qm area: a closed core space zone and an open area, that is initially not separated from the common area of the apartment.

The core zone, the bed, a wardrobe and a small desk, thus absorb all the essential functions of the individual space. The flexible zone may change according to individual preferences and habits of each resident,

either remaining completely open, be a room divided by furniture (table, shelf), partially or completely separated by displacing the wall of the core zone or use of a second wall. The construction makes it possible that the inner walls can be manufactured and treated in the DIY with simple means.

These simple options open up the opportunity for the later completion of further forms of housing.
